Muslim Community Announces Artist-in-Residence Program
The Ahmadiyya Muslim Community announced its first artist-in-residence will be Martha Eleen, an artist with keen interest in urban issues. Martha will be producing a series of paintings that explore the Bai’tul Islam Mosque as focal point for the community of Peace Village.
“Peace Village (a subdivision north of Toronto) attracted me because its name is inviting during this time of wars, rampant Islam phobia and fear of multi-culturism. The combination of modern housing with vibrant spiritual community life has become an important aspect of Canadian landscape” said Ms. Eleen on her appointment.
During her stay, Ms. Eleen’s work will involve public workshops and presentations, and will culminate in an exhibition of her paintings at the Ahmadiyya Muslim Exhibition Centre. An accomplished artist, her work Into the 905: The view from the Car has been exhibited at various public art galleries in Ontario and British Columbia. It was presented in Descant Literary Review (Suburbia issue) and was also reviewed in other media and publications.
“The artist-in-residence program is one more attempt to promote understanding of every day life of religious communities through various media including arts” said Naseem Mahdi, President and Missionary In charge, of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Canada.
Located in the city of Vaughan, the head office of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community of Canada, and the subdivision of Peace Village is a model for any community that is built around a place of worship.
Ahmadiyya Muslim Community (also known as the Ahmadiyya Movement in Islam) has millions of followers spread in more than 170 countries. Members of the community are law-abiding, peace-loving and are contributing in all aspects of the social and economic life of the country they live in. They are actively engaged in charitable work and running schools and hospitals in the developing countries where the need is most acute. Ahmadiyya Muslim Community is a global religious organization founded in 1889.
